PaperStone® - Countertops of the Future?

PaperStone® isn't exactly new to the market, but we are firm believers that we'll be seeing and installing more and more of this product.

Started in 1996, PaperStone® has been around for a minute. With the shift towards using ecologically responsible materials (that still stand the test of time!), we're placing our bets on seeing this product around more.

So what makes PaperStone® so cool, and why should you consider using it in your next project? Let's first break down what PaperStone® is - then we'll get into where you can use it.

So, what is PaperStone® made of?

--> Produced with 100% recycled paper - certified and approved by the stringent standards SmartWood® Program of the Rainforest Alliance® and FSC®

--> PetroFree™ resin - a product that is not derived from petroleum, petroleum derivatives, chemical or synthetic products - therefore 100% ecological

--> No use of VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), including formaldehyde. This means there's no off-gassing of radon - a leading cause of cancer in the United States.

How is it produced?

--> Sheets of recycled paper are saturated with resin

--> Once stacked and arranged under a press, they polymerize under heat and pressure

--> Number of sheets = the final thickness of the produced panel

But is it comparable to other solid surfaces? (And what about durability?!)

Did you know that PaperStone® is so durable that it's often used in school laboratories? If it can withstand the antics of a high school chem lab...we're confident it can withstand your home.

--> Price-comparable to other solid surfaces (and in many instances, lower)

--> Simple and rapid processing and installation often make it even more advantageous and economical

--> In contrast to other solid surfaces, PaperStone® feels warm to the touch - offering a unique tactile experience

--> As a non-porous surface, it's used in creating a horizontal surfaces that aren'tt prone to staining

--> Totally water repellent, with absorption rates virtually at zero (stop by Basecamp to see how our sample is looking in a glass of water!)

--> Certified as a surface suitable for contact with foods in accordance with the American Certifying Body NSF® and European EC1935

--> Resists temperatures up to ~180 degrees and does not melt, liquify or explode

--> Earned a Class A UL rating for flame propagation as well as smoke index according to testing based on ASTM E84

Next week, we'll be digging into other PaperStone® made products and sharing where you can use this unique product.
